The snail and the whale - なぜ幼稚園児の英語の絵本が読めないのか - picture book challenge
TOEICは900点超え、英国ロンドンで10年のビジネス経験があっても、3歳の息子に読み聞かせるための絵本の英語が理解できない。
英語の絵本は単語が豊富。その背景には、ライム（Ryme）がある。良いライムがあるかどうかは、本の評価のひとつ。あの本はとても良いライミングがあるよ、という評価の表現を聞く。韻律を用いるために、聞きなれない単語や表現がたくさん出てくる。駄洒落のようなことから、耳あたりが良く思わず何度も呟いてしまうようなフレーズも。日常の子供との会話の中にもそうしたライムが使われる。父親が娘にsee you later, aligature!と話しかけるように。そうして子供は言葉や表現を覚える。
分からなかった単語や表現をメモしておきます。
The snail and whaleは、小さなナメクジとクジラの冒険。一緒に海を旅するうちに、迷って浜に打ち上げられてしまったクジラをナメクジが助けるお話。

wriggleは、体をくねくねさせる。stay putは、動かずにじっとしている。stay put on the holidaysなど、家で何もしない時の表現にも使われる。
