Fits and Will - なぜ幼稚園児の英語の絵本が読めないのか - picture book challenge
TOEICは900点超え、英国ロンドンで10年のビジネス経験があっても、3歳の息子に読み聞かせるための絵本の英語が理解できない。
英語の絵本は単語が豊富。その背景には、ライム（Ryme）がある。良いライムがあるかどうかは、本の評価のひとつ。あの本はとても良いライミングがあるよ、という評価の表現を聞く。韻律を用いるために、聞きなれない単語や表現がたくさん出てくる。駄洒落のようなことから、耳あたりが良く思わず何度も呟いてしまうようなフレーズも。日常の子供との会話の中にもそうしたライムが使われる。父親が娘にsee you later, aligature!と話しかけるように。そうして子供は言葉や表現を覚える。
分からなかった単語や表現をメモしておきます。
ケンブリッジでおみやげに買った絵本。FitzとWillという猫の追いかけっこの話。ちょこちょこと動き回る時の表現が盛りだくさん。Fitzはお洒落な靴が大好きな女の子。WillはFitzがいないとダメ。仲良し。
基本的に現在形で書かれていて、活き活きした様子が伝わってくる。
Fitz loves footwear to bits.
love something very muchと同じ意味。

Willは彼女のそばにいるのが好き。
Fitz and Will set off as a pair.
set offは出発する。

Fruit piled high.
fruitは複数形としても単数形としても使える単語。この場合は複数だけど、sをつけない。
Will spots a big waffle mountain.
spotは見つける、標的にする。
He’s off in a flash to the sprinkle and syrup.
in a flashはすぐに。sprinkleは粒状の砂糖やチョコレート。
Sending some strawberries scattering.
苺を撒き散らした。
the baby wakes up with the clattering.
赤ちゃんはカチャカチャと音を立てて起きた。
Fitz meanwhile happily potters. Past flower stalls, tables and chairs.
potterはのんびり過ごす、ぶらぶらする。
She happily dances and pounces and prances.
pounceは、飛びかかる、爪でつかむ。pranceは飛び跳ねる。韻を踏んでいる。
Will is lost without Fitz.
lost without で、いないと困る、いないとダメである、
He knocks down the stand of busking brass band.
（街中で見失ったFitzを探している間に）路上のブラスバンドの観客席を驚かす。the standは観客席。buskingは大道芸をする。knock downは驚かせる。
With a pitter-pat patter the cats leave the Square, weaving their way down the street.
pitter-patは（心臓が）ドキドキと。patterはパタパタと。pitter-patterでパラパラ、パタパタという擬音。また、パラパラ、パタパタと音を立てるという動詞。weaveはよろよろ曲がりくねって進む。ドキドキしながら広場を後にして、よろよろと通りを進んで行った。
They leap on a bicycle seat.
leap onで乗り込む。leap on inとしても使う。leap on in a taxiでタクシーに乗り込む。
Cobbles and paths and perfect green grass, a huge tent with tables and chairs.
cobblesは敷石。
The Graduation feast makes Will’s whiskers twitch.
whiskersは、ほうひげ。twitchはピクピク動く。恐怖で顔がひきつる痙攣もtwitch。
Will keeps looking back, so walks right in the track of a trolly with sheets stacked for cleaning.
backとtrackとstackedがライムしている。
They scamper and scatter and pitter-pat-patter away, as the cross cleaner wails,
scamperは、ふざけて急いで走る。scatterは撒き散らす。wailは嘆く。
you mischievous pests!
mischievousは、いたずら好きな。社会や人に害をおよぼす。pestは厄介者。このいたずら好きの厄介者め！
But she barely sees more than their tails.
尻尾を見るのがやっと。more thanはbarelyと合わさって、尻尾以上の部分が見えるか見えないか、くらいの意味。きっと。
they run through a cloister.
cloisterは修道院、回廊。
they fly, across huge, green lawns, past students in gowns,
lawnsとgownsのライム。gownsは正服。
Splashes and squeals from the punts on the river,
squealはキーっという音。ネズミの鳴き声にも。この場合はpuntがあるので、パント船（平底小舟）を漕ぐ時のギーコギーコという音。
Fitz and Willl leap off the wall
leap offは急に起き上がる。
Will worries and flurries,
これもライム。flurryはうろたえさせる。
Scampering through flowers for what feels like hours,
flowersとhoursのライム。
Fitz, meanwhile, is racing ahead.
race aheadで、速いスピードで前進する。
She’s following fancy-foot feet.
fancy-foot feet、お洒落な足元の足。
but then hurries and scurries, poor Will - how he worries,
rriesのライムみっつ。scurryはちょこちょこと走る。scurry about aimlesslyは、あてもなくうろちょろ動き回る。
