Dirty Bertie, Burp! - なぜ幼稚園児の英語の絵本が読めないのか - picture book challenge

TOEICは900点超え、英国で10年のビジネス経験があっても、3歳の息子に読み聞かせるための絵本の英語が理解できない。

英語の絵本は単語が豊富。その背景には、ライム(Ryme)がある。良いライムがあるかどうかは、本の評価のひとつ。あの本はとても良いライミングがあるよ、という評価の表現を聞く。韻律を用いるために、聞きなれない単語や表現がたくさん出てくる。駄洒落のようなことから、耳あたりが良く思わず何度も呟いてしまうようなフレーズも。日常の子供との会話の中にもそうしたライムが使われる。友達同士で、easy peasy lemon squeezy!と、そんなのカンタン、ワンタン、サムゲタン、みたいな?ことを言うように。そうして子供は言葉や表現を覚える。

分からなかった単語や表現をメモしておきます。

このDirty Bertieを読み始めてから、格段に子供の英語が理解できるようになってきた。汚くてお下品な男の子の話。はなくそやら、くさい靴下やら、何でもあり。こういう汚い系のものが子供の笑いにつながるのは万国共通のようです。

Burp!げっぷ!がテーマ。不味い給食を出されて不満爆発のBertieが、ハンガーストライク?のようなことをしつつ、理不尽な先生に仕返しをします。

 

Lumpy mash with gloopy gravy.

Lumpyは、塊の多い、ゴツゴツした。gloopyは、ネバネバした。

 

Cold custard with slimy skin on top.

slimyは、ねばねばした。

 

It looks like frogspawn.

frogspawnは、カエルの卵。

She ladled a gloopy green mess on to Bertie's plate.

ladleは、おたまですくう。

 

Boiled bogeys with squashed slug.

bogeyは、はなくそ。squashed は、ぺしゃんこになった。

 

Off you go!

とっとと出て行け!

 

But I haven't had anything since breakfast grumbled Darren.

grumbledは、不満を言う。

 

She sounds very cross.

crossは、不機嫌な。grumpyも、同じような意味。

 

He was home and dry.

home and dryは、安心で、大丈夫で。

 

An arm shot out and barred his way.

腕が間に入って行く手を阻んだ。

 

What's that lump under your jumper?

lumpは、塊。

 

Miss Skinner's finger prodded his jumper.

prodは、つつく。

 

It crackled and rustled.
パチパチ、サラサラと音を立てる。

 

Some sweets and chocolate bars scattered at Miss Skinner's feet.

scatterは、散らかる。

 

Bertie opened the door a crack and peeped in.

ドアの隙間から覗き見た。peep inは、覗き見る。


Bertie gasped.

gaspは、ハッと息を飲む。

 

Bertie scowled.

scowledは、しかめっ面をする。

 

Maggot jelly.

ウジ虫ジェリー。

 

Miss Beansorout was always boasting that her meals were made with fresh ingredients.

boastは、自慢する。

 

Bertie doubled back and slipped across the dining hall to the kitchen.

double backは、引き返す。slip acrossは、素早く越える。

 

Bertie tiptoed over to the fridge and opened door.

tiptoeは、つま先立ちで歩く。

 

Bertie pulled out the tin

tinは、缶。

 

Inside was a sea of fat wriggling grubs.

wriggleは、うごめく。grubは、幼虫。

 

She grabbed a jug of water and fluffed it down.

jugは、水差し。glugは、ゴクリと飲む。

 

she screeched.

screechは、金切り声をあげる。

 

I... I don't understand, stammered Miss Beansprout.

stammerは、口ごもる。

 

You're right, Miss Beansprout, fumed the Head.

fumeは、怒りをあらわにする。

 

Mrs Mould was back behind the hatch in her grubby apron.

grubbyは、汚い。

 

He clapped a hand over his mouth and fled from the dining room.

fledは、逃げる。fleeの過去形。

 

Dunno, shrugged Darren.

dunnoは、don't know。shrugは、肩をすくめる。
